Should You Buy A Home After A Major Life Milestone?

During conversations with home buyers over the years, one of the biggest questions that we’ve been asked is “when someone should buy a home after a major life event?”.

This is a very common question to ask because most people want to own their own home but they often don’t know how long they should wait after the milestone, or if they should purchase a home before it.

Two of the most common life milestones that most people go through are getting married and or relocating out of California for their jobs.

In this article, we will provide you with tips on when you should buy a home before or after going through either of these two life milestones.

Getting Married

There’s no doubt that getting married is a milestone decision but the reality about buying a home at this stage of your life is that it all depends on you. Especially if you and your spouse are ready to settle down then commit to living in one area for the next 5-7 years.

If you and your spouse are not “sold” on living in any one area of Southern California in particular then you may want to consider waiting to buy a home until after you’ve decided which area you want to live in.

At the end of the day if you find a great home that’s in the perfect location, close to your job, the budget makes sense, and the finances make sense, then by all means you shouldn’t hesitate on buying a home now regardless if you’re still engaged or newly married.

Relocating

Are you planning on relocating for your job or is there a possibility that your company could relocate you within the coming months or year? In this case, we suggest that you hold off on buying a home right now unless you know for sure that you’re going to be staying in Southern California long term.

The only other way we suggesting buying a home right now, if you’re relocating, is if you plan on buying a SoCal home for investment purposes only because you can easily live anywhere in the United States and be a hands-off investor since we can also provide full-service property management.
