Avoid Craigslist Scams when Buying a Home

Craigslist is an online resource that’s universally loved around the world by people who are searching for rental homes, and especially homes for sale. But the sad thing is that Craigslist can be a dangerous online resource that’s full of scammers who are waiting for innocent people to take advantage of. We’ve been dealing with clients on Craigslist for over 5 years now and it is becoming more dicey than ever for people looking for a good home or agent.

How do you use Craigslist and realize its benefits like finding a great home for sale? The answer is preparedness. By following these simple tips in this post, you can prevent yourself from being a victim of the many scams that persist of the internet’s top classified site.

    Always Stay Local

When buying a home from an ad that you found on Craigslist or buying something, it’s important to stay local and resist the temptation to buy something that is out of your area. Scammers will lie and do anything possible for you to write them a check or money order and mail it to them. If you are an investor and can’t be local, appoint someone you trust to represent you in the area who can physically inspect the property before handing over any money.

By dealing with someone who actually lives in your local area, you will be able to have recourse if you’re scammed or “go with your gut” before signing an agreement or mailing a check to avoid losing money when buying anything from an ad that you found on Craigslist.

Never: Send A Wire Transfer, Cashier’s Check or Money Order

Regardless if the person that you’re dealing with is local or not, never agree to send them a cashier’s check, money order or any type of wire transfer because with these types of financial transactions, it’s easy to get scammed and never see the money again once it’s gone. When buying a home, always perform the transaction through a trusted Escrow company. If renting, look at property records and make sure the person you’re dealing with actually has title to the home, or at the very least has the keys to the home. Don’t be desperate enough to hand over money when all you’ve seen are pictures. You wouldn’t give a restaurant your hard earned money before you saw the food, right?

    Cash Is Always King

When buying or selling a home on Craigslist, always opt to complete the transaction in cash because, cash is king and the safest form of currency with any transaction. If the buyer or seller doesn’t feel comfortable paying with cash, it’s always best to complete the transaction in a bank where the cash can be withdrawn and deposited immediately.

    Do the Online Research

It doesn’t matter if someone is buying or selling a home that they posted on Craigslist; it’s always important to research the buyer or seller because, a little bit of online research can go the extra mile at helping someone to avoid getting scammed out of their money.
